Compile problem: gnumeric-1.0.9

I'm using kernel 2.4.18, gcc-3.0.4 and simply "./configure" to to
configure the source tree.  configure runs without complaints and exits
with the following message:

        Guile Support:          no
        Evolution Support:      no
        GB Support:             no

gnumeric-1.0.7 compiled fine on the same machine.  What do I need to
change to make this work?
