Not a valid text file

I've been exporting and importing comma-separated-value (csv) files in gnumeric
for some time now, up through various versions up to the current 0.56 that I'm
now using. However, this week, right out of the blue, gnumeric will no longer
import csv files. Basically, after selecting the file, as usual I tell it to
"Text File Import", press "OK" and it comes back with the following error
message:"Could not import file home/j.... This file does not seem to be a valid
text file".

I've even tried opening old gnumeric spreadsheets and exporting them as csv
files, and I can't even open these ones? Has anyone else run into this same
problem? How can I get back into the csv file business?
