[GnomeMeeting-list] make install gnomemeeting as non-root

Greetings!

I am trying to compile 1.0.2 hoping to get rid of a speech pitch problem I have with an older version. Is it not enough to use

./configure --prefix=$HOME/usr/stow/gnomemeeting

to install it in my home folder? When I subsequently run 'make install' it tries to create files under /etc/gconf/. I have tried to append

--sysconfdir=$HOME/usr/stow/gnomemeeting/etc/

to the configure script, but it doesn't seem to help. I get 'make install' errors of the following type:

WARNING: failed to install schema `/schemas/apps/gnomemeeting/general/user_interface/local_video_window/size' locale `da': Failed: Could not make directory "/etc/gconf/gconf.xml.defaults/schemas/apps/gnomemeeting/general/user_interface": Permission denied
