Sorry Anne but it has made no difference at all. Even if I start 
up as root at a console and then startx as root I can still not 
get anywhere. Changing the owner to root.video and adding myself 
to the group video make no difference. I am beginning to think MD 
9.2 is full of bad patches. I have tried various versions of 
ov511 driver starting at 1.65 thru 2.25, various pwlib versions 
and various kernels. I just seem to end up with more and more 
problems.
I looked at your website suggestions but none of those work 
either. I cannot get and permissions to change even for 1 second.
Something seems to be seriously wrong somewhere.
