When I used RH8 I also, sometimes, had that error .
I think, if I remember well, I would open Xautv , select the apropriate 
device for the camera (if
this is what you want) , close it, go to Gnomemeeting and select the 
apropriate device again .
This time it would let me select it and work fine .
If this doesn't work try Gnomemeeting's Configuration Druid .

This, of course, does not release you of triyng all the apropriate steps 
Damien has sugested ...
