The lastest stable floppyfw-2.0.4 was released on 2002-12-10 and it was
build from the kernel 2.4.20. So you may use it safely with iptables
instead of the old ipchains. (I used floppyfw-1.9.10 with kernel 2.4.12,
released on 2001-10).

I'd love to be able to move up - however - 2.4.x kernels need a maths
co-processor (or at least that's the error I get) and this is an old
old gateway 486 model. I did try this a few months back - can't recall
which 2.4.x kernel it was - and it wouldn't boot.

If you can tell me I'm wrong I'll be happy :-)

There is an option in the kernel configuration called "Math emulation" in "Processor type and features" or CONFIG_MATH_EMULATION in autoconf.h.

The floppyfw kernel is probably released without that option, but it shouldn't be too hard to compile your own kernel with the coprocessor emulation enabled using the configuration from floppyfw as a template. Question is if the extra 66KB won't be a problem on the floppy.
