Yes it's the same in the university. Can't be the reason.

No, now I am sure it does only happen in kde 3.1.1 (newest version from the unstable-debian-branch).
In gnome 2.2 it works.

To me it looks like a problem registering the system-tray-icon in kde.

I am using this version at the moment.
