I don't think that gconf is correctly installed.
I don't know how the packaging system  works with slackware, but once
the package is installed, there is a command to run :
gconftool --install???
I don't remember exactly, but the answer is in this mailing list, try to
browse it.

Vincent, is this command run by the slackware pkg system after it is
installed?
