Try cat /dev/dsp > /dev/dsp, and talk in your mic. If you are hearing yourself 
with a small delay, then the card is full duplex and it is another problem.

Pay attention to the fact that you should hear your voice recorded then played
back, don't confuse that with the electronic echo that is played on some
soundcards when recording.

No problem, don't worry about that. 
I know some parts of the FAQ are misleading, sometimes it is too complex.
