Mouse Button Configurations

Hi,

I've been using laptop computer by touchpad for years.
The other day I want to buy a mouse.
Then I had done some search on Linux support of various mice.
I got an impression that there seems to have no graphical and reliable
way of mapping mouse function keys on Linux.

For example, random distro wiki pages shows geeky, X-dependent steps.
