I managed to play a bit with gnome-abrt now. Here are my initial impressions:
On the surface, it is close to the oops design, that's nice.
Underneath, it is still very much the same abrt ui that we've seen
before:
- after clicking 'Report' I have to endure a long wait for retracing
or install gobs of debuginfo (long wait there too...)
- then, it asks for a bugzilla account
So, it is still pretty far from several of the central points in the
'Oops' design:
- Reporting needs to be anonymous, unless the user explicitly opted in
to a 'developer mode' or something like that. The tool should not ask
for bugzilla credentials on the spot.
- Reporting should be fire-and-forget - don't make the user wait for a
retrace, or walk through a multi-step submission process. After
clicking
"Report", I should be done. All the retracing and bugzilla
reporting, duplicate detection, etc should happen server-side, without
my involvement. Again, if I opted in to 'developer mode', things may
be slightly different, but a multi-minute wait while I am trying to
report an issue is still not acceptable.
In other news, I have put together an initial bit of work for the
privacy panel in
http://git.gnome.org/browse/gnome-control-center/log/?h=wip/privacy
If you want to look at implementing the Diagnostics section there, I
would recommend to architect it in a way that avoids a direct abrt
dependency - that is likely going to be unacceptable. But setting two
gsettings key that get picked up by a session service would be fine.
