gnome-volume-control

Hello,
I have one problem while using gnome. My laptop has a quite bad internal
sound card. Because of that I bought a usb sound card. That works very
good but one problem is getting on my nerves.

With "gnome-volume-control" I define my usb card and it works. I can use
the applet to raise or reduce the volume. But often I use my laptop on
the way without usb sound card. The internal device is used - perfect.
But the next time I plug in my USB sound device the control does not
switch back to the usb and stays at internal device.

Every second or third boot I need to reconfigure that ... this annoys me
very much. :-( This is one point KDE is better, because they have a
order that does not change and if first device is not present the second
is automatically choosen. If the first device appear again the first is
used again.

Because of that I'm searching for a solution. I would like to create a
script that looks every X minutes for the possible devices and if a USB
device is present this should be used. I'm missing the correct command
for that.

1.) getting possible cards (I only know the way with 
	cat /proc/asound/cards
    or
	aplay -l
    )
    Is there a better command for that?
2.) How can I set the default output device for the gnome environment?
