For your information then, the following is the content of
gsd-debug-randr.log (g-s-d 2.32 as distributed with Ubuntu 10.10) after
starting g-s-d.  Notwithstanding what is in the file, the resolution
switches to 800x600 (see xrandr output below) during g-s-d startup.
Building a local version and running it in gdb shows that this happens
at line 2350 of gsd-xrandr-manager.c (a call to
apply_stored_configuration_at_startup()).
