I noticed that this is now relatively old - from 1999, hence the
references to gnome-config and friends.

I've written a more up-to-date version for GTK2 (at
http://www.gnome.org/projects/ORBit2/appletstutorial.html, linked to
from http://developer.gnome.org/doc/tutorials/), plus I have the
original Docbook XML sources if required.
