When pmount is installed, isn't it meant to "manage" /media, i.e. is it
bad to assume that everything going on in /media is pmount-related, and
all the other mount points are not?

According to its manpage,

       (it) will mount device to a directory below /media if policy is
met (see below).  If  label  is  given,  the
       mount point will be /media/label, otherwise it will
be /media/device.

Also, when gnome-mount is used, the (p)mount code will only be reached
when the HAL UDI is NULL.
