Trash not working - partial analysis

Hi,

I'm debugging #171073, or the variant in Suse 10 which is "trash doesn't
work at all":  the trash icon in Nautilus always appears empty, and if
you double-click it, you get an empty window even though files are
present in ~/.Trash.

I've narrowed things down to this:

... but at that point, I discover that I don't know anything about how
HAL works or how it is supposed to interact with gnome-vfs :)

Help from someone with hal-fu would be greatly, greatly appreciated.
