I had to do likewise before configure would find libfam, suspect this
is more of a gnome-vfs problem than a gamin problem (sorry for the
cross post if it is not)?

I am trying to install Gnome 2.10.0 in /opt/gnome2.10.0 and had to;

export CFLAGS="-g -O2 -I/opt/gnome2.10.0/include/ -L/opt/gnome2.10.0/lib/"

prior to running configure for gnome-vfs for the fam phase of configure to work.
