Re: gnome-soc-list Digest, Vol 71, Issue 3

Hi Christophe,

I did go through the ideas page before but didn't know about students
page. But now I have read both of them and really wish to apply for
GSoC 2015 under Gnome. Please guide me on how to start.

I have tried fixing a bug in Nautilus as I was interested in doing a
project on Nautilus, I also talked to Carlos Soriano regarding that
but he is no more taking applicants. Other than that, I have thought
of 2 ideas on my own:
1. Improving User Interface of Empathy, with everything getting a
newer and better look in gnome, empathy seems like the left one. I am
thinking of completely new UI designs like a tree with messages on its
big leaves or a curtain which drops down to show messages and then
goes up.
2. Adding variety to gnome lock screen. Currently gnome lock screen is
like a curtain which goes up and then the user can type his/her
password and enter. This could be improved by adding more
possibilities like a wall of bricks or blades which can move apart and
let user type the password, furthermore these bricks or blades could
be used for notifications or widgets.

Eventually I would like to implement all of these in Gnome but as for
now I am not sure if they qualify for gsoc or not and I don't even
know whom should I discuss them with or how should I proceed. Apart
from them, I also like the idea of "Implementing additional event
sources for GNOME Shell's Time & Date drop-down" mentioned on Ideas
Page.

Please tell me on how should I begin.

Thanks,
Shivam Mishra

Hi,

I am Shivam Mishra, an IT student from India Institute of Information
Technology, Allahabad, India. I have been using Linux and open source
tools for more than 3 years now. I mostly use Fedora OS with Gnome
being my preferred desktop environment. Previously I have worked on
some open source projects like HPX by Stellar Group for fractal
generation and solving N queen problem for higher values of N using a
cluster of computers, echoprint & chromaprint for music fingerprinting
and cryopid for saving and resuming state of a running process.

I am really interested in contributing to the development of open
source projects and would like to participate in GSoC 2015 with a
project in Gnome.

Please guide me for the same.

Thanks,
Shivam Mishra
