Hello everyone
I am Abhiroop, 3rd year student from BITS Pilani Goa, India. I have been using the Ubuntu operating system exclusively for the past one and a half years. I really appreciate the multiple features supported by the Gnome desktop and the amount of customization it provides. However ever since I migrated from the Windows operating system to Ubuntu one of the features that has been bugging me the most has been the desktop search feature in Ubuntu.
Currently I am using the Ubuntu 12.04 OS and I have noticed that many times the searching and querying takes a long time to process and even at times the unity dash doesn't provide the relevant results. After looking through some documentation I looked up at the git repository of Beagle which is the current desktop searching and indexing system.
What i am suggesting is that we can improve the searching and recommendation feature of the system to a great extent. I myself have experience working with Apache Lucene and I am sure it can serve those specific purposes as such and can improve the functionality of the desktop indexing system.
I am not sure if this could be suggested as a project idea for GSOC 2013. But if there is any scope for working on it and anyone is interested I can elaborate a lot more on this if its is of interest. Most of my coding experiences have been in Java, Python and C#.
Currently I am working on my college project for building a semantic search engine based on LSI for intra campus searching purposes and I am sure I can contribute to this project if necessary.
Regards,
Abhiroop Sarkar
