Did you run/use GNOME Boxes or Vinagre?
I think a good start is talk with the possible mentors for this
project: zeenix and teuf, in #boxes IRC channel.

I have used Vinagre in university labs but not Boxes. However the project seems manageable as we need to use the functionality of vinagre to implement missing protocols in Boxes so that its able to deal with virtual systems remotely (using SSH tunnels etc).

Did you see that Cosimo wrote a few notes about the project in:
https://live.gnome.org/GnomeOS/Design/Whiteboards/Archives

I have gone through these notes. It seems quite interesting as I have myself avoided the interface that archive manager package provides and personally use tar form command line to extract the files. However a person non habitual to linux distro may find it hard and inconvenient to deal with achieves. My personal experience with compressed folders in windows is quite convenient. In which we can almost treat files as if they exist in file manager. The most convenient interface for a usual computer user is copy paste type for both adding and extracting files to archive.

However Jonn suggestion
I click on a zip file link containing photos in Web. Web starts to transfer the contents locally in a new window/tab. When ready it displays them with the option of saving to Photos. When I click that option it saves them as a new album in the Photos library.
This seems doubtful as archives may contain mixed files as well. So these may be dealing with some special cases.

Although this project has a clear goal, I suggest you to talk with
David King (amigadave).

Do you have some experience with Wayland?
I have heard that this is making way to replace xserver but I dont currently have any experience with it.

Same comment did about EasyTAG project.

Let me advice you as an ex-GSoC student. Spliting your time to fix a
few bugs in 5 projects, write 5 proposals can be a bit hard.
I strongly would like to suggest you to focus in 1 or 2 ideas. But
what idea? It's up to you. Choosing a project you already have been
using in your day-to-day is always good. Choosing a project where you
have more familiarity with the languages is also good. But, as I said
above, it's up to you.

I thought that I must specify projects and possible mentors would reply to this mail. I was not aware of the workflow that I must individually contact particular mentors.
I will focus only on one-two projects and will try to contact mentors asap.
Thanks again for your comments. it really helped.
