Google Summer of Code Survey

Dear GSoC students at GNOME,

My name is Andreas Schilling. I am a research assistant at the chair of Information Systems and Services at the University of Bamberg. In my research I examine aspects which keep developers committed to their open-source projects. At the moment, I am focusing my research on the various factors that are relevant for Google Summer of Code (GSoC) students' project continuance.

GSoC is a very special annual event, and its long-term effects on developers are a very interesting research topic. As you have probably already experienced, you are confronted during GSoC with different aspects of development work and community interactions which have not only a lasting effect on your view of open-source contributions in general but also on your concrete future in GNOME.

Because the best way to find out more about these effects is to survey the people who are directly affected, I would like to take the chance and ask you for your help. It would help me a lot if you could give me a quick feedback about the early experiences you have made so far in GSoC. Based on my research I developed a short questionnaire. The questionnaire is in total 4 pages long and is structured in the sections "Your motivation", "Your experiences" and "Your conclusions". I would deeply appreciate if you could take 10 minutes (I promise it will not take longer) and complete the questions until July 1st.

This survey is exclusively for GSoC students, therefore, I sent you a personal invitation with the link to this survey to your email account. If you have not received the email invitation yet, please send me a mail to this email address. Although I am cooperating for this survey with the GNOME admins, they did not provide me with your email addresses so I had to collect them myself.

I assure you that none of your personal answers will ever be given to the GNOME team. Consequently, I guarantee you that your answers have no effect at any time on your GSoC-evaluations, on your mentorship, or on your stipends.

As soon as I finish my research I will publish a blog post with the aggregated results on my research, so that you can have a look the findings.
If you have any questions about this questionnaire or about my research please to not hesitate contacting me.

Finally, I would like to wish all of you the best for your coding projects.

Thank you very much in advance

Andreas
