[gnome-slackware]GCL under Slackware

This should be a simple one but... How does one
compile GNU Common Lisp gcl-2.4.[01] under Slackware?
Has anyone succeeded to do it just by unpacking the
tarball (making sure that file dats are preserved) and
then ./configure; make? It always fails for me when
attempting to do make saved_gcl under unixport,
complaining about libmport.a, which should have been
built, but isn't.
Pointers, anyone?
