RE: gnome-session-3.14.0 will not start

I discovered that gnome-session does not search for *desktop files in
/usr/local/etc/xdg/autostart - $XDG_CONFIG_DIRS is not defined and I cannot
find where in the gnome-session code that the default is stated so that I
can adjust it - is this possible?

Anyway, if I symlink /etc/xdg -> /usr/local/etc/xdg, gnome-settings-daemon
and others start, but:

(gnome-settings-daemon:20244): media-keys-plugin-WARNING **: Unable to
inhibit keypresses: GDBus.Error:org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.ServiceUnknown:
The name org.freedesktop.login1 was not provided by any .service files
gnome-session[20194]: WARNING: Application 'gnome-shell.desktop' failed to
register before timeout

..and eventually gnome-session times out waiting for something.

With gnome-3.10.x, I did not need to start consolekit - do I now have to
start it with "startx", if so what format is required?
