I'm running Debian too and there appears to be a problem with mutter
(2.91.92-1). I rolled back to the previous version (2.91.91-1) from my
local cache and it's running fine again. (I haven't logged a bug report
yet.)

I don't know about twm, but that process works for me logging into GNOME
classic.

Can you select GNOME 2 ("GNOME" on my system) when you login?
