Ubuntu has a patch that modifies the file manager desktop file that
says "Don't Don't Display This Application No Matter What", so we
don't display it. In a proper gnome3 environment, it will be on the
left, along with Firefox and OpenOffice.
It's suboptimal, I know, and right now I just like to get a file
manager by typing "Home" into search.

This has been the case for much longer than the redesign: for as long
as I can remember, you always had to right-click and choose "New
Window".

Is there anything you miss?

The favorites are shown in all portions of the overview, on the left
in the area called the "dash".
And yeah, I'm not the best person to be talking here, because I always
use search to do what I want.

They don't look as good as they should without the appropriate GTK+
theme as well. See how they really should look from the screenshots at
http://gnome3.org/ . Again, I use Ubuntu, and I can't tell you how to
change it, I just live with the uglyness.

I use gnome-shell on my desktop with a 24" screen from DELL, and I
know lots of other people use it on their desktops.
