You can do it using the Tweak Tool, Shell> Show date in Clock.
well well well.... I certainly did NOT expect that! Excellent. Thank you
very much.
Looks like I can even configure the the middle click button to minimize
a window.... Not that it is easy to get it back (need to grab it from
Activities).
