In gconf SOCKS entries were defined although they were un-set in the
Network Settings dialog [the Network Settings dialog complains that
the version of Network Manager is incompatible].  So something is going
on in the GNOME3 installation.

Deleting the keys via gconf-edit fixed the issue; Evolution can now
