There is also a technical problem in keeping windows open when the app is in the background: the window will continue to receive damage/expose events and continue to redraw itself in case it has animations. This happens to me with Evolution, whose connection spinner eats my CPU and causes a noticeable slowdown when using other real time apps. IMHO, this means that we need collaboration on the application side for making it background, and cannot just put window somewhere else or hide them, if app continue assuming their active and the user is interested in them.
