Shell Fail Over

Quick question, is it possible to have gnome shell automatically fail
over to another window manager? I ask because I have been having some
problems with the shell recently, this is to be expected as I am using a
git build, but when the shell crashes it just restarts and crashes
again. This makes it difficult to manually fail over.
