icons in overview panel do nothing

hi.

i was just wondering, why can't i use the icon widgest 
(or whatever the correct name is) like volume, battery etc
in the overview?

when i try to adjust the volume by clicking on the speaker
icon while im in overview, nothing happens.

i can't see a reason why this shouldnt be possible.
