Right. And wrong. There are so many papers written about colours and
colour-mood association that there shouldn't be any problems in showing
the effects. For example start here (chosen randomly):

and follow the references. Sure - some people will prefer it black, some
white and some pink. But neither of them is a "safe choice" and there
exists a typical colour-mood correlation in a big enough group. If GS is
designed for everyone, then it should be as safe as possible by default
and can do whatever crazy things are possible via customisation.

And so are other colours in right combinations. Also white on black is
not easier than white on grey, or grey on black on an usual screen, so
it's kind of hard to talk about black + something undefined.
I agree about the second point of the main post of course.
