I found that a workaround is editing
~/gnome-shell/source/gnome-shell/configure.ac, and changing the line

MUTTER_MIN_VERSION=2.91.4

with

MUTTER_MIN_VERSION=2.91.3

so that autogen stops complaining and the building process can complete.
