Recently accessed file list is maintained by GTK+, and  not gnome-shell. May be you need to forward this request to GTK+ mailing list. It can be implemented from gnome-shell side, but it will be a very bad hack.

Recent Documents is taken from main gnome platform. I understand your argument and I agree with that. You can raise a bug to track the request. If others feel that  it would add confusion, later you can mark it as junk. (as "recent documents" is widely used in all the platforms, even in windows)

3.Introduce Tabs in the Recent documents module.(just icons can be shown rather than text).

Hmm.. I feel this idea makes sidebar a little clumsy. Categorization/classification beyond one point actually irritates the user. User has to use an extra click to browse a document if we introduce tabs. These are just my opinions and your views are welcome here.

One idea that I am planning to implement is to show recent documents based on the desktop context.

 

5.introduce cutomizable tabs also so that we can add custom file types to be shown separately.

6.Add filter tabs also in 'Recent documents' for Time and Size.(vertically in left side).

I am afraid, controls would eat up the little area that we have. may be we need to re-design the overlay to fit these suggestions. brain-storming is needed.

 

7.Differentiate files listed in recent files using subtle highlights etc. according to the application it was opened with. this is particularly useful while showing "all files". (Images opened with GIMP, EoG, gthumb etc)

Rather than showing colours (which obviously makes the view a little ugly. and also, ppl like me keep forget colour associations :-), we could display a small icon in the right bottom side of each document box.

As of now, recent docs can only be opened in their default applications. So, need to give an option, so that user can choose his fav app. Currently I'm struggling to make menu widget work. Once it is done, I will probably jump onto this.

 

8.Currently 'Recent documents' list shows files that are recently accessed only. It doesnt seem to show files recently created.

again GTK+ ppl need to involve into this.

 

9.Introduce collapse/expand buttons to the module coloumns (recent docs, places etc.) so that more modules like activities can be added.

Yaah.. This one is good to have. It will be useful in the future once we start adding some widgets/functionality to sidebar. May be it is already raised in our bugtracker, not sure. Could you check it and raise a bug if it is not raised already.
