I agree with Hans--I'm on Ubuntu Forums & in the new Lucid testing forum there is a very interesting thread about Gnome Shell. For those who are interested in the current thoughts about the project:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1305154
I will include my post for those who do not want to look at the thread....
I really want 3 things--
1. A way to configure the upper panel the way I want--In my current
setup, I don't use a top panel at all--I came from the Mac OS world
& helped Beta OSX--So you might guess that I still do a OSX-like
dock at the bottom.....
2. A way to make the panel non-solid colour--I like a desktop that
blends well & only intrudes in a minimal manner----a simple slider
like Gnome Panel has at present would be nice.
3. A way to easily shut off composite--I game & it's a real pain to
turn it off in the Shell--you really need to quit the Shell, play your
game & then turn the Shell back on--messy.
All-in-all, I like the way it is going & have had some very good
conversations with the developers--nice change from the "normal" Gnome
practice..........
I do really like the direction the Shell is going, but I still see a need for applets, a way to customize the user experience & a way to make the Shell more "game-friendly"
Thank you for thinking about these thoughts from a "typical" user.

Indispensable for me is currently the gnome system monitor
(cpu, mem, net, hd) also pretty important here in a hot country where
I live, the
sensors applet (cpu, hd) temperature. There should be some space for
applets which should be always visible (the panel?)
Kind regards,
Hans
