Thank you very much for all that information.  I'll check out those links.

I did find these two documentation sites for Clutter, which is fairly 
central to gnome-shell:

Although the latter is aimed at C programmers, I think I can mentally 
make the bridge from C to JavaScript via the "gir" files that you 
pointed out.
