There's   a   problem  here   -   under   1.4,   there  was   a   file
~/.gnome/sun_valid_file. On login, I looked for this file to determine
whether I was looking at the  Linux .gnome or the Sun .gnome, and then
rename  the directory appropriately  (forget what  I said  above about
symlinks - symlinks didn't work, so I ended up just renaming stuff). 

Under 2.x, I no longer see this file under .gnome or .gnome2.
