If you are upgrading from Gnome 1.4 to 2.2, it will be quite a bit of 
packages to upgrade.  If you want to avoid upgrading X and possibly 
glibc, you may need to rebuild some of the lower level packages such as 
glib2,gtk2 and the libgnome* guys.  Oops, forgot, you are going to need 
Xft which is now included with X so you will probably need to upgrade 
that one as well.  You can rebuild it which may keep you from needing to 
upgrade glibc, or just upgrade the whole lot.  You will also need to 
upgrade/install some packages for Gnome 1.4 compatibily 
(libcapplet0,gnome-libs).
