I guess the redhat forum you came across is related to:

A udev upgrade might help.
Also, as comment #16 in the above link points out, udev can remove
created device nodes.... but I don't suppose that's your problem.
If you're in a determined move, you could try installing the latest
version of pilot-link (I can recommend the CVS version; the official
0.12.0pre{2,3,4} releases are broken, and most of the patched ones,
too). I believe the 0.12.0 versions of pilot-link do try to retry
devices several times before giving up.
If that works, you can (temporarily) get a patched version of gnome-
pilot from http://www.inference.phy.cam.ac.uk/mcdavey/downloads/
