Network Sync

What is the status of network sync with gnome-pilot? I've googled
endlessly and read many, many posts on the subject. I've seen many
comments that have lead me to conclude it just doesn't work, but every
so often I'll see one that tantalizes me with the possibility that it
just might.
Everything I've read agrees that hand editing of the config file is
required; that the configuration ui doesn't support network syncing is
clear. Some places I have read that the [Device0] section needs to be
Type=1 (USB I presume) with device=net:. Others have said use Type=4
(Net) and set the ip, netmask, and host parameters. I've tried various
permutations of these and had no luck. pilot-xfer, on the other hand,
seems to work nicely.
Someone posted a patch about a year ago that was apparently supposed to
fix some wrongness in gpilotd's use TCP vs. UDP, but as near as I can
tell by comparing the patch with the sources, it was never applied.
Is anyone working on this at all? It seems that with bluetooth and wifi
becoming more prevalent in palm devices, more and more people are going
to need a working network hotsync.
Thanks,
Jay
PS - This question is much more conceptual and maybe more properly
directed towards the bluetooth people, but I'm curious and perhaps
someone here knows: Why does sync over bluetooth need to touch the ip
layer at all? It would seem to me that it would be easier and more
transparent to treat the bluetooth connection as a serial port, and in
fact based on the config wizard on my Treo, that seems to be what it
expects.
