Synchronization trouble: "An error occured while getting the pilot's system data"

I'm having trouble synchronizing my Sony CliEG-NX60 with my computer.
I start "gpilotd" and press the HotSync button on the cradle, and this
is what "gpilotd" says:

gpilotd-Message: gnome-pilot 2.0.13 starting...
gpilotd-Message: compiled for pilot-link version 0.12.0-pre2
gpilotd-Message: compiled with [VFS] [USB] [IrDA] [Network]
gpilotd-Message: Activating CORBA server
gpilotd-Message: bonobo_activation_active_server_register = 0
gpilotd-Message: Watching Cradle (/usr/local/dev/pilot)
gpilotd-Message: Found 4766, 0001
gpilotd-Message: Using net TRUE
...
gpilotd-Message: Found 12ef, 0100
gpilotd-Message: Using net TRUE
gpilotd-Message: setting PILOTRATE=57600

(gpilotd:3498): gpilotd-WARNING **: An error occured while getting the
pilot's system data

The process lasts about a second, after which the device says, "HotSync
operation complete." But no conduits have run or anything like that.

Does anyone have an idea of what is wrong?

Possibly relevant information:

* I recently upgraded to Fedora Core 4. I think synchronization worked
fine on Fedora Core 3.

* This happens both on a 2.6.12.2 kernel I configured myself and on the
official Fedora "kernel-2.6.12-1.1390_FC4".

* I'm using the following RPMS from Fedora Core:
	gnome-pilot-2.0.13-2
	pilot-link-0.12.0-0.pre3.0.fc4.1
The same problem happens with "pilot-link-0.12.0-0.pre2.0".

* I'm using "udev", so the device file "/dev/ttyUSB1" for my USB port
exists only during synchronization; "gpilotd" didn't like this. So I
created a device file "/usr/local/dev/pilot" with the same device
numbers (188, 1) and permissions 666; "gpilotd" uses this device.

* If I point "/usr/local/dev/pilot" to "/dev/ttyUSB0" (188, 0), then
"gpilotd" says exactly the same stuff up to the end of the "Using net
TRUE" lines. Then it spits out "setting PILOTRATE=57600" and the error
message every 2 seconds until I cancel synchronization from the pilot.

* I'm have a "usbfs" at "/proc/bus/usb". When the pilot is trying to
synchronize, the "devices" file there reads:
	T:  Bus=02 Lev=01 Prnt=01 Port=00 Cnt=01 Dev#=  7 Spd=12  MxCh= 0
	D:  Ver= 1.00 Cls=00(>ifc ) Sub=00 Prot=00 MxPS=16 #Cfgs=  1
	P:  Vendor=054c ProdID=00da Rev= 1.00
	S:  Manufacturer=Palm, Inc.
	S:  Product=Palm Handheld
	C:* #Ifs= 1 Cfg#= 1 Atr=c0 MxPwr=  2mA
	I:  If#= 0 Alt= 0 #EPs= 4 Cls=ff(vend.) Sub=00 Prot=00 Driver=visor

	E:  Ad=07(O) Atr=02(Bulk) MxPS=  64 Ivl=0ms

* The system log reads:
	Jul 15 15:35:51 mattlaptop kernel: usb 2-1: new full speed USB device using uhci_hcd and address 8
	Jul 15 15:35:51 mattlaptop kernel: visor 2-1:1.0: Handspring Visor / Palm OS converter detected

	Jul 15 15:36:07 mattlaptop kernel: visor 2-1:1.0: device disconnected

* The pilot has "MS Import" software that makes the Memory Stick in its
slot available to a computer as a USB storage device.  This works fine;
"hal" detects the "disk" automatically.

* SELinux is installed but completely disabled.

Thanks in advance for any help that anyone can offer.
