I've seen that thread. When I read it I thought I was about to get this
fixed! But /proc/bus/usb/devices exists, usbfs is in the kernel, and
the Palm shows up in that file when I press the HotSync button.

After my original post, I noticed that I forgot to mention this. My
apologies. pilot-xfer -l works - successfully lists the contents of my
(nearly) empty new PDA. In fact, if there is a way to write a conduit
for evolution using pilot-link then I don't need gnome-pilot.
(Accepting alternative suggestions for PIMs other than Evolution too -
but I like the look and feel). As everything BUT gpilot is working, I
figure there's gotta be one small thing I'm missing. . .
