initial sync fails with tungsten e2

Hello everybody. I need some helping getting my new Tungsten E2 set up
with gnome-pilot. I'm running Debian Sid with kernel 2.6.10.

Here's the problem. Gnome pilot applet does nothing after pressing the
hotsync button while attempting to establish the first link to the palm
(to get the user id). This generates no error message. The pilot,
however, says that "The connection. . . cannot be established."

dmesg shows that the driver loads ok:

usb 1-2: new full speed USB device using ohci_hcd and address 41
visor 1-2:1.0: Handspring Visor / Palm OS converter detected
usb 1-2: Handspring Visor / Palm OS converter now attached to ttyUSB0
usb 1-2: Handspring Visor / Palm OS converter now attached to ttyUSB1

The devices and links exist (udev working):

lrwxrwxrwx  1 root root           7 Jul 12 21:08 pilot -> ttyUSB1
crw-rw---- 1 root dialout 188, 0 Jul 12 21:08 ttyUSB0
crw-rw---- 1 root dialout 188, 1 Jul 12 21:08 ttyUSB1

I am a member of dialout.

when run from the command line, gpilotd shows this output during the
sync attempt:

gpilotd-Message: gnome-pilot 2.0.12 starting...
gpilotd-Message: compiled for pilot-link version 0.11.8

My Gnome Pilot Settings applet settings are:

Port /dev/pilot
Speed 57600
Timeout 2
Type USB

I've tried different timeouts and speeds, and /dev/ttyUSB0
and /dev/ttyUSB1.

I have googled my life away for the past few days. Please help!

James
