do you have the file /proc/bus/usb/devices?
If not, you'll have to enable usbfs, which may require a
kernel recompilation. See the thread
"Tungsten E can't sync" from April 18th last.
Anothing thing to check is whether you can use the pilot-link
command line tools. Try "pilot-xfer -p /dev/pilot -l" to
list the contents of your Tungsten.
