OK...I've got pilot-xfer to work 100% of the time.  I can even get
gnome-pilot to work about 50% of the time.  I play with it, punch the
hotsync button & start & stop the app, and eventually it may or may not
actually sync.

Here's what I'm showing (of course, there's a lot I've snipped...)

This is what I did in order to get it to work to the extent that it does
at this time...I can't believe I didn't check it til you said something,
though.
