Hmmm, try and go into the capplet and set the timeout for
the cradle to 5 secs.

So I did that, and now I don't get any timeouts. However, I almost invariably get the following behavior:

   - The 'gnome-pilotprogress' window pops up.
   - The 'gnome-pilotprogress' window almost immediately goes away.

And when I look at ~/.gnomerc-errors (thanks, Scott), I see the following messages:

   gpilotd-Message: setting PILOTRATE=57600

which makes me suspect no synchronization is taking place. The number of "Wrong packet type on queue" lines, and the number and sequence of "Weird packet" messages is different each time I try to sync, and

Also, when I pull up the "Last sync log" from the PilotSync applet's menu, it re-displays the incomplete 'gnome-pilotprogress' pop-up with the message "PWA-Pilot Synchronizing" at the top, "Database 0 of 1" in the box just below it, an empty box below that, and then below that the scrollable message pane with the single line

(I can send a JPG of the pop-up if needed -- I just figured the list mailer doesn't accept messages with attachments).

Argh! Is something hosed up? The most frustrating part is that it's worked once ...

P.S. After 25 more failures while composing this message, sync. just worked twice in a row! (nice green icon, by the way)
