I noted, that when I used gnome-libs-1.0.53-1 rpm's, I did not have this
problem. But when I compiled and installed gnome-libs from the 1.0.53
tar.gz, I began to experience the same problem.

How and which gnome-libs are you running ?

I'm now trying with the 1.0.55.
