problems getting sync to connect

I've just installed gnome-pilot (pilot-link.0.9.3, gnome-pilot-0.1.46,
control-center-1.0.6), and things went along swimmingly, until I ran
into problems getting my palm III to talk to the system (RHv6.0).

Here's the output:

[carl@czech carl]$ ls -al /dev/pilot /dev/cua0 /dev/modem
crw-rw-rw-   1 root     root       5,  64 Dec 15 19:03 /dev/cua0
lrwxrwxrwx   1 root     root            4 Dec 15 14:18 /dev/pilot ->
cua0
lrwxrwxrwx   1 root     root            4 Jul 19 14:15 /dev/modem ->
cua0
[carl@czech src]$ which gnomecc
/usr/local/bin/gnomecc
[carl@czech src]$ gnomecc

At this point, I press the sync button on the cradle as per dialog, and
wait a while till the palm times out with a message that it couldn't
connect to the desktop. I have used the system with NT before this, and
things work well.

I've tried the obvious, re-make, re-install, make sure no other versions
exist, make sure no other gpilotd processes are running, different baud
rates, the whole schmeer.

Got any clues?

Regards,
Carl
