The source file used to generate configure is called "configure.ac". The
program used to generate configure from configure.ac is autoconf.

The source file used to generate Makefile is called "Makefile.am". The
program used to generate Makefile from Makefile.am is automake. (Slightly
simplified explanation.)

So I suppose suitable documentation would be "info autoconf", and
"info automake".
