I am new to building version of gnome that is not straight from my
Distro, I am wanting to try out the Gnome 2.5.x series to see what 2.6
might be like, SuSE is behind on the Gnome side so I am going to attempt
to build one from source, can someone help me? What I am needing to
know is there any special build order, if yes, what is it? and how do I
edit my session startup script to point to the new version once I get it
built.
Your best bet is using a script since building all the dependencies
manually is hard and boring:
- jhbuild if you plan to get the sources from cvs (you can get it from
gnome cvs itself)
- garnome if you prefer tarballs (http://www.gnome.org/~jdub/garnome/)
There are other scripts but I never used them.
Once you have compiled everithing you have to mess with your login
scripts, which I think change from distro to distro and depend if you
are using GDM or starting X by hand with startx. In my case I added a
session file in /etc/X11/gdm/sessions.
