[gnome-love] saving an image (updated but still stuck)

I went off and read the source
of gimp-1.3.0 and dia-0.88.1.
Both implement their own file_save
functions.

They #include <png.h>, fill some
structs and then write buffers to
files with fputc.

I could rob their code but the
file_save code would dwarf the rest
of my project. There must be an
easier way, or a GNOME standard way.
Can anyone offer suggestions?
